Artthink is the name behind the bbq-donut, a boat nobody mistakes for anything else, because it is round. A barbecue is built into the centre, a ring of seating for up to ten people runs around it, and a bimini keeps the sun off. Power comes from a near silent electric outboard, there is a fridge for drinks, and with the grill lifted out the middle becomes a place to lie down. The idea comes from Germany, with Matthias Kleiter named as the man behind it. The round boat is developed and built at the meta-technik site, and since 2009 Artthink has run barbecue trips on it for families, friends and youth groups. Its sides are popular with companies who want their logo on the water.
Our model records hold two designs, both listed as motorboats and both still current. The bbq-donut starts with build year 2004 and measures 3.62 metres, which on a round hull is also its diameter. The bbq-donut Type 2 follows from 2012 at 3 metres. There are no further lines: Artthink builds one shape in two sizes rather than a range of classes, and the two differ by a little over sixty centimetres. Because production continues, brand new donuts share the water with boats that have been in use for some twenty years. The boat is made for sheltered water, lakes, rivers and harbour basins, where slow electric cruising and a grill in the middle make sense.
Looking after a bbq-donut means looking after more than a hull. The grill wants cleaning after every outing, and the area around it should be checked for heat marks and grease. On the electric drive, the batteries decide how far the boat goes, so their age and charging history are worth asking about when buying second hand. The bimini frame and canvas suffer from wind and sun, and the fridge needs a working power supply. On a used boat, check the joints of the ring-shaped seating, the bracket where the outboard is mounted and any signs that the hull has been knocked against quay walls on busy days.
