Grady-White comes from Greenville, North Carolina. Glen Grady and Don White started the company in 1959 in an old tobacco warehouse, and the first boats were 16- and 17-foot runabouts with lapstrake sides on steamed white oak frames, shipped from February 1960. In 1968 Eddie Smith, then 26 and backed by his father, bought the struggling business, and the first glassfibre boats followed in 1969. During the eighties the yard developed the SeaV2 hull, which became the signature of the whole range. The programme centres on boats for fishing and coastal cruising: centre consoles, dual consoles, walkarounds and express cabin boats. The model number usually hints at the length in feet, as with the 209 or the 306.

These are working fishing boats as much as pleasure craft, and a used one shows it. Rod holders, livewells, fish boxes and their plumbing deserve a check for leaks and cracked fittings. Salt water leaves its mark on trim tabs, steering gear and electrical connections, so a look behind the console pays off. Many are trailered, which means the trailer, its brakes and its bearings belong in the inspection as well. On the walkaround and express models with cabins, check hatches and windows for leaks. A boat built in the United States may also need its electrics and its paperwork adapted for European waters.
