Hallett Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Hallett Boats comes from the American West Coast, with its home in California. Nick Barron founded the company, starting out by building ski boats in the family garage. Mini cruisers of 18 feet with V-drives followed, then 21-footers with high-performance drives, and later the 300-T, the yard's first offshore-style model at 30 feet. The 400-T, a 40-foot offshore performance boat, was said to be Barron's own favourite. For its newer hulls Hallett worked with Michael Peters Yacht Design and adopted the designer's twin-stepped bottom. The boats are recognisable by long, narrow hulls, a deep vee and big inboard power, with the 400-T running twin Mercury Racing engines.

Our model records list two designs, both entered as motorboats: the Hallet 335-T Closed Bow at 11.06 metres and the Hallett 400-T 2.0 at 11.88 metres. Both lines start with build year 2019 and run into the most recent build years. Older Hallett boats, such as the early ski boats or the first 300-T, do not appear in our data. The Closed Bow in the name of the 335-T refers to an enclosed foredeck, typical for offshore boats. At a little over eleven to just under twelve metres, the two models sit close together and belong to the class of large sports boats built for speed on open water.

A stepped offshore hull asks for a careful eye. The steps and the running surface should be checked for cracks and repairs, especially after hard use in waves. On twin-engine boats the drives, steering and cooling systems take most of the maintenance effort, and service records for each engine tell a buyer a great deal. Many owners trail their boats to events and poker runs, so the road trailer, its brakes and its rollers deserve as much attention as the hull. A sea trial at speed shows whether the boat runs level and whether the steering stays clean.
