Harpol; cover, cost and conditions
Harpol is a Dutch boatbuilder known above all for its Kievit sailing boats. Harpol brought out the Kievit 22 as a modernised version of the older Kievit 680, a small cabin sailboat that is a familiar sight in the Netherlands. Alongside, Harpol builds small motorboats and a sloep, the open Dutch day launch you meet on canals and lakes. Two name families make the boats easy to place: Kievit for the sailboats and the sloep, KM plus a number for the small motorboats. On the KM types and the Kievitsloep 480 the number is the length in centimetres.
Our model records hold seven Harpol designs, three sailboats and four motorboats. The sailboats are the Kievit 22, Kievit 27 and Kievit 27 S; the motorboats are the Kievitsloep 480, KM 390, KM 510 and Noor. The Kievit 22 opens the list in 2002 and runs longest, to 2015; everything else is recorded from 2003 to 2012. Lengths go from the 3.9 metre KM 390 to the 8.35 metre Kievit 27, with the 27 S at 8.2 metres and the Kievit 22 at 6.8.
These are boats for inland water and sheltered coast. The motorboats and the Kievit 22 travel well on a trailer, so a slipway day trip is easy, while the Kievit 27 is happier on a fixed berth. Shallow lakes call for a lifting keel or rudder used with care, and an open sloep is best kept under a fitted tarpaulin between outings.
