Hell's Bay Boatworks; cover, cost and conditions
Hell's Bay Boatworks builds in Titusville, Florida. The yard was founded in 1998 by fishing guides Hal Chittum and Flip Pallot together with boat designer Chris Morejohn, and it has stayed with one job: skiffs and flats boats for sight fishing in very shallow water. Low freeboard, minimal draft, wide open casting decks and a poling platform aft define the look. The names come straight from the flats of Florida and the Caribbean: Whipray and Devilray after rays, Marquesa, Biscayne, Glades Skiff and Estero after waters and landscapes.
Our model records list 13 Hell's Bay designs, all motorboats. Build years begin in 2007, and nine lines run into the latest build years, among them the Whipray, Marquesa, Waterman, Guide, Professional and Glades Skiff. The Devilray, Neptune and Skate end in 2018, and the Whipray Classic runs from 2012 to 2019. Newer arrivals are the Biscayne in 2009, the Estero in 2015 and the Eldora in 2016. Lengths range from 3.93 metres for the Skate to 7.35 metres for the Estero, while the other eleven models sit close together between 4.51 and 5.73 metres.
A skiff like this spends its days in a few inches of water, so hull bottom, skeg and lower unit take the wear. Rinse everything with fresh water after a saltwater trip, check the trailer bunks and keep the poling platform and push pole in good shape. Most owners keep the boat on a trailer at home rather than in a marina.
