Hemming & Morris; cover, cost and conditions
Hemming & Morris started in Birmingham in 1958. Jeff Hemming and John Morris, a cousin of Hemming's wife, set up shop on Waterworks Road in Edgbaston and built small motorboats. Since the boats were sold as the Marina range, the firm took the name Marina Boats in 1960. In 1963 it moved into its own factory on Lincoln Road in Olton, near Solihull, right on the canal network. Boatbuilding stopped in the early eighties, and the business has made shop and office fittings ever since. The model names give the boats away: Marina, the length in feet, and the letters GT.
Our model records list two designs, both motorboats and both with build years 1967 to 1975. The Marina 16 GT measures five metres and the Marina 22 GT 6.7 metres, so the number in the name roughly matches the length in feet. Neither line reaches recent build years, which makes even the youngest boat of the brand about half a century old. Owning a Marina GT means owning a piece of Midlands boating history, built by a small family firm that later went in an entirely different direction.
A fifty-year-old runabout needs a close look before purchase. Check the transom first: it carries the engine and is where water most often finds its way into the core. Soft spots in the floor, tired wiring and corroded steering cables are common on small boats of the period. The original engine has usually been replaced, so ask for the history of the current outboard. Most of these boats live on a road trailer, so the trailer's bearings, brakes and lights deserve the same attention as the hull.
