Hurricane builds deck boats in Indiana, at Elkhart, in the same house that builds pontoon boats there. A deck boat is a hybrid of sport boat and pontoon: it has a solid fibreglass hull that runs like a motorboat, but also a very wide unbroken foredeck with seating of the kind usually found only on a flat pontoon. You recognise them by the strikingly broad bow, built out almost to the stem, the rail running all the way round and the continuous seating without a cabin.
Our model records list 46 Hurricane models, all of them motorboats. Recorded build years start in 2016 and run into current production. Forty six series are recorded: the FunDeck models 196, 198, 216, 226 and 236, each as OB for an outboard and some with the suffixes F, SB, SFL and WB; the SunDeck 187 as IO for a sterndrive and as OB; and the Center Console 19 and 21. Lengths run from 5.7 to 8 metres, half the models between 5.7 and 7.1 metres. The three figure number gives the length in feet and tenths.
The wide bow is the point of the type and also its limit. Carrying the deck almost to the stem gives a boat of six metres the seating of a much larger one, which is why these boats work for a family on a lake. It also means the bow is blunt where a sport boat would be fine, so the shape wants sheltered water rather than a short steep sea.
