IMP Boats; cover, cost and conditions
IMP Boats built fibreglass sports boats, most of them in the seventies. Owners and restorers know the brand for its model names taken from Indigenous peoples of the Americas: Aztec and Inca among them, with the Comanche added later. The Aztec measured about 20 feet and the Inca about 23. IMP also used plain type numbers, and they help to identify a boat: the three digit figure is roughly the length in feet times ten, so the IMP 182 WT is a little over 18 feet and the X-246 just under 25. Many of these boats are now being restored as classics.
Our model records hold seven IMP designs, all classed as motorboats. Six carry build years from 1972 to 1979: the IMP 167 WT, 182 WT, X-176, X-246, Aztec Cabin and Inca HT. The Comanche follows from 1977 to 1984 and runs latest. Lengths go from the 5.04 metre IMP 167 WT to the 7.5 metre X-246, with the Aztec Cabin at 6.1 and the Inca HT at 6.98 metres. Cabin and HT point to a cuddy or a hard top.
An IMP is a trailer boat through and through, light enough to tow behind a family car. At around fifty years old, the transom core, stringers and fuel tank are the first places to check, and the engine deserves a full service before the first season. Dry storage under a tarp keeps the gelcoat in shape.
