Järnbröderna AB; cover, cost and conditions
Järnbröderna AB is the company of the brothers Lars and Henrik Peterson, whose family has long been at home on the rugged west coast of Sweden. The name translates as the Iron Brothers, and the boats are sold as Iron. The brothers developed the hull in Sweden together with the Mannerfelt Design Team. The idea is a cross between a RIB and a sportsboat: instead of an air filled tube the hull carries a low, D-shaped fender that lowers the centre of gravity and protects the topsides without eating into the space inside. Beneath it sits a V hull taken from racing boat practice. An Iron is easy to pick out by that slim collar just above the waterline, in place of the fat tube of a classic RIB, and by its open layout without a cabin.
Our model records list four designs, all classed as rigid inflatable boats. The range is called Iron throughout, and the number follows the length: the Iron 647 at 6.52 metres, the Iron 707 at 7.12 metres, the Iron 767 at 7.67 metres and the Iron 827 at 8.32 metres. All four start with build year 2019 and reach into the most recent build years. The Iron 767 is the second largest; it takes a single outboard of 200 to 300 hp, and tests report more than 50 knots. The range is compact and young: just 1.8 metres separate the smallest and the largest, and none was built before 2019.
An outboard boat built for speed asks for attention in a few places. The engine is the heart of it: service history, hours and the state of the steering and controls matter more than cosmetic wear on the deck. The D-shaped fender takes knocks that a tube would otherwise absorb, so its fixings and the joint to the hull beneath deserve a look after a hard season. Many Iron boats are trailed, and a trailer with good brakes, rollers matched to the hull and working lights is part of the package. Fast runs between the rocks of the Swedish skerries are part of the appeal, which is why a look under the hull for scrapes and repaired gelcoat belongs on every viewing of a used boat.
