Macwester; cover, cost and conditions
Macwester is an English name in family cruising yachts. Macwester Marine was set up by C. S. J. Roy, who had worked for Westerly Marine before and drew the boats himself. Early boats came out of a hangar at Ford aerodrome in Sussex, and from 1968 the firm built in Littlehampton on the south coast. In 1979 the manufacturing rights went to Trident Marine. The twin keel is the signature: the Macwester 26 has two bilge keels and a rudder on a long skeg, so it can take the ground in a tidal harbour and stay upright.
Our model records list 13 Macwester designs: eleven sailing yachts and two smaller sailing boats, the 22 and the 24. Eight carry a number, from 22 to 36, and five carry names: Kelpie, Malin Ketch, Pelagian, Rowan Rose and Wight Class. Build years run from 1962, with the Macwester 26, to 1988, with the Macwester 27, the longest recorded line. The 32 runs to 1985 and the Rowan Rose to 1984. Lengths range from 4.55 metres for the Kelpie to 10.97 metres for the Macwester 36, and ten models fall between 6.8 and 9.73 metres.
These are boats for creeks and drying moorings, where twin keels let them sit on the mud between tides. After forty years and more, keel bolts and the joint between keels and hull deserve a close look, as do chainplates and the rudder skeg. A Macwester is happy on a cheap drying berth, and many owners keep it afloat all season close to home.
