Mak is a family of sailing yachts whose best known model is the MakTen. Germany's Yacht magazine described it as the project of two sailors from northern Germany who took their own new design all the way to series production: a lively cruising boat, built in Poland and fitted out in Germany. One of the early units was finished as a centreboard cruiser with internal ballast and a ballasted board. The names come in two styles, digits as on the Mak 707 and Mak 9, and English number words such as Seven, Nine, Ten, Eleven and Sixteen that match the length in metres closely.
Our records list nine Mak models: eight sailing yachts and one smaller sailboat, the MakSeven. Build years run from 1991 to 2022. The Mak 707 has the longest run, 1991 to 2022, followed by the MakTen from 1998 to 2017; the others fall between 2000 and 2014. Lengths range from 7.5 metres (Mak 707) to 16 metres (Mak Sixteen). Four models cluster around nine metres: the Mak 9 at 9 metres and the Mak 9 DS, Mak 9 DS S Exclusiv and Mak Nine at 9.5 metres each.
Most Maks on the water today are second-hand boats from the 2000s, so standing rigging, sails and the centreboard case deserve a close look each spring. The two boats around 7.5 metres can be towed with the right car, which opens up lakes and sailing areas far from home. A centreboard version is at its best in shallow bays and estuaries, where it can take the ground gently, while the larger yachts are berth boats for coastal cruising.
