Northmaster is a young name in small motorboats. The boats are designed in Scandinavia and built in Poland, and the British boating press credits the team behind Oceanmaster with the brand. A UK agent in Poole handles sales. The line-up is short on purpose: an entry boat, an open boat and a cuddy cabin. The flagship 685 Cruiser rides on a deep-vee hull with an air step meant to shorten the time to plane and soften the ride. A high wraparound windscreen, a cockpit seating seven and, on the 685, a small cabin forward with two berths and a toilet make the boats easy to place.
Our model records list four designs, all of them motorboats. The Northmaster 535 is the smallest at 5.35 metres and appears from 2016. The 635, also from 2016, measures 6.35 metres and ends in our records in 2021. In 2018 the 645 Open at 6.45 metres and the 685 at 6.85 metres joined. Three of the four lines, the 535, the 645 Open and the 685, run into the most recent build years. Every model stays below seven metres, and only 1.5 metres separate the smallest from the largest.
These are outboard boats that spend much of their life on a trailer, so the road gear deserves as much attention as the hull. Check wheel bearings, lights and the winch strap before every season. The outboard is the heart of the boat: service records, engine hours and the condition of the steering cable tell more than the paint. On a used 635, which leaves our records in 2021, look at the air step area and the transom for stress marks from hard running. A deep-vee hull at speed rewards careful trim, and the open layout of the 645 means cushions and upholstery live with the weather.
