Viggo boats are built at the old yard in Öregrund, a small harbour town on the Swedish Baltic coast north of Stockholm. Varvet simply means shipyard in Swedish, so the company name is just the place. Öregrund has a long tradition of building modern aluminium boats, and the Viggo brand was launched there in 2013, developed by the designer Håkan Pettersson. The boats are easy to recognise: slender, deep-vee hulls in untreated aluminium, left bare rather than painted. The yard describes its aim in plain words: boats that get from A to B quickly, safely and reliably, year after year and whatever the weather.
Our model records list three designs, all of them motorboats and all running into the most recent build years. The Viggo C8 comes first with build year 2013, followed a year later by the Viggo X8. Both measure 8.2 metres, roughly 27 feet, and differ mainly in the layout of deck and helm. The Viggo C10 Offshore joined in 2018; at 10.95 metres it is the largest boat in the range and, as the name says, meant for open water. There are no Viggo boats built before 2013, so every boat of the brand is still fairly young. The range stays small and clear: two eight metre boats and one larger boat for longer passages.
Bare aluminium needs little cosmetic work, but it does ask for attention below the waterline. Anodes should be checked every season, and any stainless fitting or copper based antifouling close to the hull is worth a second look, because mixed metals in salt water invite galvanic corrosion. On a used Viggo, look at the engine hours and service history first, since these boats are built to run fast and often. Check the welds around the transom and the engine mounts, and make sure the electronics have been updated rather than patched. In the Swedish archipelago many boats are used well into autumn, so a dry, well ventilated cabin matters too.
