Orrion was an American builder of small sports boats. The US Coast Guard's manufacturer register lists Orrion Boats at an address in Sacramento, California, with open motorboats among its product types. That matches the programme in our records: compact runabouts just under and just over six metres, the kind of boat used on lakes and rivers. Some carry plain type codes such as Mark 17 F, Mark 18 V and Mark 19 V, others bird names, Albatross and Oriole. We found no documented founding year or designer.
Our records hold six Orrion models, all motorboats. Three belong to the Mark range: the 5.75 metre Mark 17 F (1975 to 1983), the 5.8 metre Mark 18 V (1975 to 1982) and the 5.9 metre Mark 19 V (1975 to 1983). Three more arrive in 1977 and run to 1984: the 5.75 metre Albatross, the 5.9 metre Oriole 19 V and the 6.55 metre Orrion 21. Lengths span 5.75 to 6.55 metres and build years 1975 to 1984, roughly one decade. Five of the six stay below six metres.
An Orrion today has more than forty years on its hull. Many have been repowered or fitted with newer electronics, so it pays to check transom, stringers and the fuel system before buying. These boats are made for the trailer and the slipway rather than a permanent berth, and a dry place under a roof does the old gelcoat a lot of good between seasons.
