OSM Boat; cover, cost and conditions
OSM stands for O'Sullivan's Marine of Tralee in County Kerry, Ireland. The company says it has built its own range of boats there since 1963, using heavy, hand laminated fibreglass hulls meant for Irish lakes, rivers and coastal waters. The names give an OSM away: nearly all start with an S and come from the Irish map, such as the Shannon and Suir rivers, the Skellig and Saltee islands or Lough Sheelin. A three digit type number, roughly the length in centimetres, often comes first, as in the OSM 510 Skellig or the 606 Seamrog.
Our model records list 30 OSM models: 28 motorboats and two small sailing boats, the Shillela Sailing and the Syclone. Build years run from 1995 to 2008, and none of the models is still in production. Lengths go from 2.3 to 6.7 metres, with half of them between 4.0 and 5.5 metres. Tenders such as the Small, Suir, Skerry and Siog stay under three metres. The Skellig comes as Cruiser, Fisherman and Skellig II at 5.1 metres, while the Seamrog and Seamrog Cruiser stretch the same idea to 6.05 metres. The Shannon measures 5.0 metres, the Sapphire 6.1, the 19ft Speedliner 5.8 and the Sullee 6.7 metres.
These are working boats for anglers and families, launched from a slipway or a trailer and used on lakes, rivers and sheltered bays. Every OSM on the water today is second hand, so condition decides more than the name. A sound, dry fibreglass hull, the age and power of the outboard and fishing electronics set the value of a given boat.
