Peter Nicholls has been building boats in steel since 1973. The company started out as Peter Nicholls Steel Boats and today trades as Peter Nicholls Yacht Builders, based in Northamptonshire. Peter Nicholls still runs it together with his business partner Roger Baileff. Alongside sailing yachts and motor sailers the yard turns out Dutch barges, Thames barges and inspection launches, all of them in steel. The Renegade is a round-bilge steel yacht, while the Leopard 32, drawn by Tony Tucker, has a chined hull built to RCD category A, with a choice of long keel, twin bilge keels or lifting keel and of gaff or bermudian rig.
Our model records list three designs. The Huffler appears as a sailing yacht of 10.5 metres built from 1991 to 1998, although the yard itself describes the Huffler range as motor sailers. The Renegade 43 measures 13.27 metres and is also listed from 1991 to 1998, which makes it the largest boat of the brand in our records. Steel is strong but lives or dies by its paint.
