Peter Webster Ltd. built its yachts at the Ropewalk Boat Yard in Lymington, Hampshire, on the Solent. From around 1960 to the mid-seventies the yard produced the Elizabethan range, glassfibre cruisers from 23 to 35 feet and among the earliest fibreglass sailing yachts built in Britain. The Elizabethan 30 was drawn by David Thomas in 1968 as a cruiser-racer with a fin keel and a skeg ahead of the rudder. Peter Webster ceased trading in 1976, and most of the moulds passed to Drummond Bayne Marine, which is why the story of the range did not end there. Many Elizabethans are still sailing and remain sought after on the used market.
Our model records list five designs: four sailing yachts and one smaller sailing boat. The Elizabethan 29 comes first, 8.84 metres long and listed from 1961 to 1967. The Elizabethan 31 at 9.45 metres follows in 1963 and runs to 1987. In 1967 come the Elizabethan 30 at 9 metres, which stays in the records longest with build years up to 1994, and the Elizabethan 23 at 7 metres, the smallest of the family. The Elizabethan 33 at 10.06 metres joins in 1971 and is listed until 1990. None of the lines reaches recent build years, so the youngest boats are over thirty years old and the oldest past sixty.
Buying an early GRP yacht means looking past the gelcoat. Laminates from the sixties were often laid up thickly, but decks with balsa or plywood cores can soften around stanchions, chainplates and the mast step, and a moisture meter tells more than a walk across the deck. Keel bolts, the skeg on the Elizabethan 30 and the rudder bearings deserve inspection. Many original engines have been replaced over the decades, so the age and history of the current one are worth knowing. Standing rigging of unknown age is commonly renewed before serious passages. A boat that has been sailed and maintained steadily is often a sounder buy than one that has stood ashore for years.
