Pheon Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Pheon Yachts was a small yard at South Heighton, near Newhaven on England's south coast, run by John and Peggy Dandridge. They took a licence to build the Vancouver 27, a compact offshore cruiser drawn by Robert Harris of Vancouver, Canada, and launched the first glass fibre example in 1976. Pheon refined the production methods, worked out new layouts such as a forward double cabin with a shower compartment amidships, and built a steel prototype of the Vancouver 38. The boats are easy to spot by their name, their cutter rig and their sturdy, traditional hulls. In 1986 Northshore, which had been moulding the hulls all along, took over Pheon and the whole Vancouver range.
Our model records list two sailing yachts from Pheon. The Vancouver 27 is 8.23 metres long and is recorded from 1975 to 1989. The Vancouver 32 measures 9.75 metres and runs from 1977 to 1990 in our data; a broker's archive counts just over 60 of them built in England, the early ones finished by Pheon. It carries a cutter rig and a shallow, long fin keel in iron. Because both lines carried on at Northshore after the takeover, the build years in our records go beyond 1986. Both are pure cruising yachts, and there are no motor boats under the name.
A Vancouver is usually bought with long passages in mind, so a survey should look at what offshore sailing wears out. Check the iron keel for rust and the condition of the keel bolts, the chainplates and the cutter's inner forestay, and ask about the engine, since early boats had Bukh or Watermota diesels and later ones mostly Yanmar. A refit list with the dates of new rigging, sails and seacocks says a lot about a boat that is now several decades old. Owners take these yachts across the Channel, along the Atlantic coast and on ocean crossings, and a well kept example is built for exactly that.
