Regulator Marine is based in Edenton, North Carolina. Joan and Owen Maxwell started the company in 1988 inside a former grocery store, and their first boat was the Regulator 26. Naval architect Lou Codega has drawn the hulls ever since, working with Owen Maxwell and the in-house engineers. The yard concentrates on centre console boats for offshore fishing. You spot one by the deep-V hull with its sharp entry, the console standing free in the middle of the boat and a deck you can walk all the way round with a rod in hand. The model number gives roughly the length in feet.

Our model records hold 21 Regulator designs: 16 listed as motorboats and five as motor yachts. The earliest build years are 2003, and nine lines reach into the most recent build years: the 23, 25, 28, 31, 34, 37 and 41 plus the 24 and 26 XO, added in 2017. Earlier families are the CC models 23, 24, 26, 29 and 32 from 2003 and the FS models in the same sizes, built from 2007 to 2017, joined by the 30 Express and the 34SS. Lengths run from 7.1 metres for the 23 CC to 14.4 metres for the 41. Seven designs stay below 8 metres, nine fall between 8 and 10, and five are longer.

A Regulator is built to run hard and far offshore, so it pays to rinse salt off the outboards after every trip and to flush the cooling system. Rod holders, livewells and the console electronics need the same fresh water care. The boats under 8 metres often live on a trailer and launch at the ramp, while the 31 and above usually keep a berth in a marina close to the fishing grounds.
