Worth knowing

Roto-Tech Sp. z.o.o.; cover, cost and conditions

Roto-Tech is based in Piaseczno, just south of Warsaw, and builds boats in polyethylene. The firm is mainly known for its Kontra range, multi purpose boats for inland and inshore waters that serve fire brigades, water rescue teams, law enforcement and armed forces, not least as support craft during floods. The material runs through everything the company makes. Polyethylene does not soak up water, shrugs off weather and stays tough in the cold. The boats are easy to recognise by their chunky one piece plastic hull with no gelcoat. The Kontra 450 RCC, for example, is 4.50 metres long and 1.90 metres wide, rated for categories C and D. Small leisure boats sit alongside the work boats.

Our model records list six Roto-Tech designs: five motorboats and one small sailing boat. All six reach into the most recent build years. The Kontra range forms the core. The Kontra 350 at 3.5 metres, the Kontra 400 R at four metres and the Kontra 450 at 4.5 metres are listed from 2015, and the Kontra 450 CC, also 4.5 metres, from 2017. The two smallest boats measure 2.58 metres each: the Szuwarek, listed as a motorboat, and the Fly, the only sailing boat of the brand. Both appear from 2015. The whole range therefore stays under five metres, and half of the designs measure four metres or less.

Polyethylene boats ask for less care than a gelcoated hull, but they still reward a look before purchase. Deep gouges from rocks or slipways can be welded, yet a hull that has been heavily dented or left in strong sun for years may have lost stiffness. Check the transom area where the outboard bracket sits, as the load there is high on a short hull. Fittings are often bolted through the plastic, so look for cracks around them. These boats spend much of their life on trailers or roof racks and are launched from beaches and slips, which suits fishing, lake trips and work on rivers.
