RS Mursan Ltd. is a Turkish boatbuilder based in Bursa, close to the Sea of Marmara. Its boats go by two names: the open boats and cuddy cabins are sold as San or San Boat, the coupé cruisers as Mursan FS. The used market shows that both come from one house, with the same San 1195 Cuddy also listed as the Mursan Cuddy 1195. The model names are easy to decode: Cuddy means a small cabin under the foredeck, and on most models the number gives the length in centimetres. At the Bosphorus Boat Show in Istanbul the yard presented the FS 28 Coupe, an 8.18 metre cruiser with two cabins that belongs to the same FS line as the larger FS 40 Coupe.

Our model records hold 14 designs, nine motorboats and five motor yachts, from the San 345 Solti at 3.45 metres to the Mursan FS 40 Coupe at 11.99 metres. The oldest entries, the Solti, the San 440 Classic S and the San 455 Dolphin, begin in 2000. The Trophy line includes the 470, 520 and 670, while the Cuddy line runs from the San 640 Cuddy through the 705, 870, 980 and 1090 to the 1195 Cuddy at 11.95 metres. Oddly, the 640 Cuddy at 6.8 metres is longer than the 670 Trophy. The San 600 Balikçi stands apart; its name is Turkish for fisherman. Ten designs reach into the most recent build years, all three Trophy boats among them. Five stay under six metres and three measure more than ten.

Most San boats run with an outboard on the transom, and on the smaller hulls it is easy to lift off, so a good lock and the habit of taking the kill cord home are worth more than any gadget. The open Trophy boats suit day trips and fishing, the Cuddy models a night or two at anchor in a sheltered bay. On a used boat, look at the transom around the engine bolts for cracks or soft spots, at the steering cable and at the fuel tank fittings. Boats that spend long summers in strong Mediterranean sun often show faded gelcoat, tired upholstery and brittle hatch seals, all easy to judge on a first viewing. On the larger Cuddy models, add the shaft seals, the bilge pumps and the battery installation to the list.
