Rufi is a Polish boatyard. It builds sailing yachts under the Cobra name, cruisers between 33 and 38 feet, all drawn by the Polish designer Andrzej Skrzat. The German magazine Yacht tested the Cobra 33 and described her as a performance cruiser from Poland. She is meant for cruising and for sporty sailing alike, on inland lakes as well as on open water; the sales particulars mention trials on the Baltic, in the Mediterranean and on Lake Constance. What sets the Cobra 33 apart is the pairing of a deep keel with an interior that, for a boat of this length, finds room for a large galley and a separate heads compartment.
Our model records list one Rufi design: the Cobra 33, a sailing yacht of 9.93 metres, entered for build years 2008 to 2019. The larger Cobra yachts are not listed under this name in our data. The sales particulars give a beam of 3.33 metres and a draft of 2.05 metres, with an 18 horsepower Yanmar for power. Below deck there are two or three cabins. That draft is generous for a boat of just under ten metres and fits her sporting intent, though it needs thought in shallow harbours and on some inland waters. The two-cabin layout gives more stowage, the three-cabin version sleeps a bigger crew. The most recent build year in our records is 2019.
A boat with this much draft rewards a careful look at the keel. On a used Cobra 33, check the keel bolts and the joint between keel and hull for weeping or cracks, especially if the boat has spent time in shallow waters. The rig of a performance cruiser is worked hard, so standing rigging, chainplates and the mast step deserve inspection, and the age of the wire is worth knowing. The small Yanmar is simple to service, but its hours, cooling system and saildrive or shaft seal should be recorded. Inside, the galley and heads see daily use on a cruising boat: hoses, seacocks and the pump are the parts to test. Sailed well, she suits both club racing and longer coastal passages.
