Sailfish Boats is based in Cairo, Georgia. Paul Hoppes Jr. founded the company in 1986 with no background in the marine trade, and from the start he aimed it at fishing boats that a family could enjoy as well. Today Sailfish builds center console and dual console boats from 23 to 36 feet, meant for inshore and offshore fishing alike. One feature that sets the brand apart is the VDS hull, short for Variable Degree Stepped, introduced in the early 2000s: a stepped bottom whose deadrise changes along its length. The boats themselves follow the classic American pattern, a central helm, outboards on the transom and open deck space all round for casting.

Our model records list ten designs, all classed as motorboats, with build years from 2018 to 2022, and none reaches into the latest build years. Seven of them are center consoles: the 220, 241, 242, 272, 290, 320 and 360. They are joined by two dual consoles, the 245 and 276, and by the 220 Walk Around. The two 220 models are the smallest at 7.2 metres, the 360 Center Console the largest at 11.7 metres. The number in each name roughly gives the length in feet. Six designs stay under nine metres, three are longer than nine, and the 272 and 276 sit in between at 8.9 metres.

Center consoles are built to be used hard, so salt, sun and heavy outboards leave their marks. On a used Sailfish it is worth checking the engine hours and service records of each outboard, the transom and its fittings, and the wiring behind the console. Livewells, pumps and through-hull fittings should all work and be free of corrosion. Many of these boats spend their lives on a trailer, which means bunks, brakes and the hull where it rests deserve a close look as well. A boat brought over from the United States should come with clear paperwork and engine details that match what is fitted.
