Sailing Marine was a yard at Harderwijk on the Veluwemeer in the Netherlands. It built sailing yachts to designs by Pieter Beeldsnijder of Edam, and the range name points to that origin, since the Gouwzee is the stretch of water off Edam and Monnickendam. One documented example is a Gouwzee 46 from 1981 with a steel hull, built at Sailing Marine. The Snoopy is described as one of the most frequently built Gouwzee types. Gouwzee yachts were not built here alone: other yards in Harderwijk also worked from these drawings.
Our model records list six Sailing Marine designs, five sailing yachts and one smaller sailing boat. The earliest is the Gouwzee Snoopy 30 at nine metres, listed from 1973 to 1986. The Gouwzee Snoopy 33 at ten metres follows from 1975 to 1982, and the Gouwzee Snoopy 36 at 10.97 metres from 1979 to 1986. Also from 1979 come the Gouwzee Perky 25 at 7.5 metres, the only design listed as a sailing boat, and the Gouwzee 45 at 13.8 metres, both running to 1986. The Gouwzee 46 AK at 11.8 metres is listed from 1980 to 1986. No line reaches into recent build years, and the range ends in 1986. The Gouwzee 45 is the largest design.
With a steel Gouwzee the condition of the hull decides almost everything. Ask for an ultrasonic thickness survey, look closely at the bilges, the area under the engine and the joint between deck and deckhouse, where water likes to sit and rust starts unseen. Older paint systems and anodes tell a lot about how carefully a boat has been kept. Many of these yachts spend their lives on the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea, where shallow water and soft ground are part of everyday sailing. A steel hull forgives a bump that would worry a glassfibre owner, but welds, keel and rudder bearings still deserve a careful look.
