Scout Boats was founded in 1989 by Steve Potts and his wife Diane in Summerville, South Carolina, inland from Charleston. The yard began in a small rented barn with 14 and 15 foot boats and today builds coastal fishing boats as centre consoles, dual consoles and shallow draft bay boats. The number in each model name roughly gives the length in feet, and the letters behind it mark the family: Sportfish for the simple open fishing boats, Dorado for dual consoles, XSF and XSS for mid size centre consoles and LXF for the large, well equipped console boats.
Our model records list 34 Scout models, 28 motorboats and six motor yachts. The earliest recorded build years date from 2000, and 23 models run into current production. Lengths go from 5.3 metres for the 175 Sportfish to 16.3 metres for the 530 LXF, with half the models between 6.6 and ten metres. The Sportfish boats measure 5.3 to 5.9 metres, the Dorado line runs from the 175 Sport Dorado to the 8.4 metre 277 Dorado, the XSF models sit around 6.5 to 7.2 metres, and the LXF line starts with the 7.8 metre 255 LXF and climbs through the 330, 355, 380 and 420 to the 530 LXF.
A Scout is built for fast coastal running, often with two or more outboards on the transom. The smaller models travel on a trailer, while the big LXF boats tend to stay on a fixed berth with a good deal of electronics aboard.
