Sea Jay builds aluminium boats in Bundaberg, Queensland. Col and Janelle Glass founded the family company in 1989. Their son Troy joined in 1999 after finishing his apprenticeship, took charge of research and development and became a part owner in 2010. The yard works with both pressed and plate aluminium, and alongside the standard models it builds custom plate boats. Many models come in several layouts. The range runs from small dinghies up to larger centre consoles, the open boats with the helm in the middle that let an angler walk all the way round. Model names usually carry the length, as in the Navigator 4.48, a centre console that also turns up in Australian dealer listings.

Our model records list 18 designs, all motorboats, all from build year 2018 and all still running into the latest build years. They fall into five series: Punt with five designs from 3.0 to 4.1 metres, Angler and Nomad with four each, Titan with three and Navigator with two. Twelve designs stay below four metres, the smallest being the Punt 3.0 at three metres and the Angler 3.15. The Navigator 4.48 and 4.68 sit in the middle, while the Titan 5.50, 5.90 and 6.30, at 5.8 to 6.7 metres, mark the top end. An aluminium hull shrugs off knocks on the ramp and the beach, but it has its own weak points. Check welds and rivets around the transom and along the chines, and look for corrosion where different metals meet, such as stainless fittings on aluminium, or where wet carpet or timber has sat against the hull. Galvanic corrosion is a real issue in salt water, so anodes and the wiring of the outboard and the battery deserve attention. Most of these boats travel on a trailer, which makes rollers, bearings and the winch part of any inspection. Rinsing with fresh water after every trip in the salt helps keep the hull in good order for years.
