Seacamper is the business of Peter Grönlund in Berlin. He developed the Seacamper motorboat and runs a yard in the west of the city that refits IF-boats. Then he went further, buying the brand and the production rights of the IF-boat and bringing the classic back. The IF-boat was drawn by Tord Sundén, based on the Nordic Folkboat, and dates from 1967. New production began in 2018 at the Yacht Service yard in Szczecin, and the first new IF-boat in 34 years was christened on the Wannsee. The relaunched boat differs from the originals in continuous frameless acrylic windows, an anchor locker in the bow, an ergonomically shaped coaming and a deck to hull joint laminated all the way round.
Our model records hold one design, the Seacamper IF sailing yacht. It is listed from build year 2015 and reaches into the most recent build years, so it is in current production. Length is 7.86 metres. According to a magazine test the beam is 2.23 metres and displacement 2.15 tonnes, of which 1.25 tonnes is ballast, more than half the boat's weight. The aluminium rig carries a 16 square metre mainsail and a 15 square metre genoa. The new boat keeps close to the lines of the old IF while offering more comfort for cruising sailors.
The IF-boat is a long keeled day sailer with a heavy ballast share, and that shapes how it is used: stiff in a breeze, at home on lakes and coastal waters, and raced in a lively class. On a new boat the main jobs are rig tuning, care of the acrylic windows and keeping the deck fittings tight. Anyone comparing a new Seacamper IF with an older IF on the used market should look closely at the old boat's hull to deck joint, keel bolts and mast step, the very points the relaunch set out to improve. A good road trailer helps, since many owners take their boats to regattas and holiday waters by road.
