TABS, short for Tough Aussie Boats, is an Australian yard in Luscombe, Queensland. It hand builds its boats from 5083 marine grade plate aluminium over a subfloor of longitudinal stringers and cross frames, and aims them at people who fish and at families. The range covers open boats, bow riders, cabins and hard tops as well as centre cab models. Buyers can choose between a carpeted timber floor and a fully welded, self draining one. Every model carries a number ahead of its series name, and the number grows with the boat: Jumbo, Master Series, Wildfisher, Marquis Bow Rider, Ocean Series, Southener and Southern Raider.
Our model records list 24 Tabs motorboats, all dated from 2018 and all still in the range, with the 5400 and 5800 Ocean Series joining in 2019. The Ocean Series is the biggest family with five hulls between 5.55 and 7.5 metres. Jumbo, Master Series and Marquis Bow Rider have four models each, Southener and Southern Raider Centre Cab three each, and the 4900 Wildfisher stands alone. The shortest boat is the 4.6 metre 4600 Jumbo Open, the longest the 6900 Ocean Series at 7.5 metres, and 14 of the 24 stay under six metres.
These are trailer boats first and foremost. Most spend their off days on a trailer in a driveway or shed and meet the water at a public ramp, so the brakes, lights and rollers of the trailer matter as much as the boat. Plate aluminium shrugs off knocks on sand and oyster beds, but it wants a fresh water rinse after salt, attention to galvanic corrosion around fittings, and care with any stainless or copper items touching the hull. A welded self draining floor makes cleaning after a fishing trip a matter of a hose.
