Tabur Marine was a boatbuilder from Saint-Léonard, a borough in the north of Montreal in the Canadian province of Quebec. The US Coast Guard register of manufacturers lists the company as Tabur Marine Inc., in business from October 1972 and now inactive. The boat types named in that entry are open motorboats, jon boats, sailing boats with or without an engine, catamarans and trimarans. What stands out in the model list are the small yaks: short, beamy plastic tenders that can be rowed, pushed along by a small outboard or towed behind a yacht as a dinghy. Sportyak, Taburyak and Mini-Yak sit alongside numbered Tabur boats of up to 4.4 metres.

Plastic boats from the seventies age in their own way. Sunlight makes polyethylene and other plastics brittle, so on an old yak look for fine cracks, especially around the oarlocks, the transom and any spot where an outboard bracket has been bolted on. Repairs to this kind of plastic are hard to make last, which makes a crack in a key place a good reason to walk away. A small boat like this is usually stored upside down or on a rack, and one kept out of the sun has a far better chance of being sound. Check that the buoyancy chambers are intact and dry inside before trusting it on the water.
