TMP Group Poland is the parent company of Craft Yachts Poland, a boatyard in Niestkowo, a municipality in Pomerania close to the Polish Baltic coast. Its chief executive and owner is Wojciech Sikorski. The yard builds small sailing boats and the Baltica motorboats, takes on construction work for other companies and also handles refits and repairs. The Baltica 660 Weekend was its first motor model, and the larger Baltica 780 Weekend came later. Both are weekend boats laid out around outboard power, supplied with Mercury engines as standard or with electric drive on request. Electric boats from the yard have gone to charter firms in Warmia-Masuria, the lake district in the north-east of Poland.
Our model records list two designs, one motorboat and one sailing dinghy, and both run into the most recent build years. The Baltica 660 Weekend appears from 2015 and measures 6.6 metres. The Optimist follows from 2017 at 2.32 metres, the familiar single-handed trainer in which children learn to sail at clubs. More than four metres separate the two, and so do their purposes: a small cabin boat for weekends on lakes and sheltered coast on one side, a training dinghy on the other. The larger Baltica 780 Weekend is not yet part of our records.
Looking after the two is a very different job. On the Baltica the outboard deserves most attention: a freshwater flush after salt water, a check of the anodes and an eye on the steering cables and on the transom where the engine hangs. Boats with electric drive need their batteries kept charged through the winter. When buying second hand, ask for engine hours and the service history. An Optimist is simple, yet the mast step, the daggerboard case and the hull edges take knocks from years of training, so a used hull should be checked for soft spots and old repairs. Both boats travel well by road, which means the trailer itself, with its tyres, bearings and lights, belongs in any inspection.
