Worth knowing
Triumph Boats Inc.; cover, cost and conditions
Triumph Boats built open sport boats in Durham, North Carolina. The company grew out of Logic, which had introduced a construction method called Roplene; after Genmar bought Logic, it was renamed Triumph Boats and the Durham plant was expanded. What sets these boats apart is the hull. Instead of fibreglass it is rotomoulded polyethylene: powder goes into a heated mould that turns in two directions until the plastic forms an even shell. Model names pair a number with CC for center console or DC for dual console.
Our records list twelve Triumph models, all motorboats. Eleven start with build year 2007 and the 186 Sportsman FS with 2011. Four lines run to 2018 (170 CC, 170 DC, 186 Sportsman FS and 195 CC), the rest end in 2016 or 2017. Five are center consoles (150, 170, 195, 215 and 235 CC), two are dual consoles (170 DC and 195 DC) and two carry the FS tag (186 Sportsman FS and 191 FS), alongside the 190 Bay, the 215 TE and the 1700 Skiff. Lengths run from 4.3 metres (150 CC) to 7.25 metres (235 CC).
A polyethylene hull shrugs off knocks at the ramp and on oyster bars that would chip gelcoat, which suits shallow bays and rocky launch sites. Repairs need a specialist, though, because the material cannot be patched like fibreglass. Most Triumphs travel on a trailer with an outboard on the transom; rinse the motor after salt water and keep the hull out of strong sun when it is not in use.
