Ungarische Schiff- und Kranbauwerke; cover, cost and conditions
The Hungarian Ship and Crane Works, Magyar Hajó- és Darugyár in Hungarian, was an industrial concern that built sailing boats alongside ships and cranes. Archive photographs show its plant at Balatonfüred, on the north shore of Lake Balaton, with a dedicated sports boat section and a sail loft. That explains the names: most boats are called Balaton, after the lake they sailed on, joined by models such as the Magyar, Amphora, Aramis, Delphin Sport and Touring Volksboot.
Our records list 13 models, seven sailing dinghies and keelboats and six sailing yachts. Seven belong to the Balaton family (16, 18, 21, 24, 25, 31 and 82) and six carry their own names. Build years start in 1965 with the Amphora, Delphin Sport, Magyar 7, Magyar 9 and Touring Volksboot. Most lines end by 1983; only the Balaton 25 appears later, from 1992 to 2001. Lengths run from the 4.88 metre Balaton 16 to the 10 metre Aramis.
Almost every boat from this yard is more than forty years old, and most were built for inland lakes, where short steep waves and sudden squalls are part of the game. The smaller models up to about 7.5 metres travel easily on a trailer, while the yachts around 9.5 metres usually keep a lake berth. Original rigs and fittings are worth preserving, but standing rigging of that age deserves a careful check before the first hard breeze.
