VA-Yachtdesign built cruising sailing yachts. We found no reliable source on where the yard was based, when it started or who drew the boats, so this page sticks to our model records. They show a range of mid-size to large cruisers in three families: Estella, VA and Viva. Estella numbers are close to the length in feet and Viva numbers to the length in decimetres with an extra digit, while the VA models carry three digit numbers from 351 to 411. The larger Estellas, the 36 and 40, carry the DS suffix.
Our records list twelve models: eleven sailing yachts and one smaller sailboat, the 7.05 metre Solitaire 7.0. Build years fall between 1994 and 2005, and every line has ended. Three are Estellas (the 9 metre 30, the 10.8 metre 36 DS and the 12 metre 40 DS). Six carry the VA prefix: the VA 351 Viala and VA 351 Viola at 10.6 metres, the VA 352 at 10.5, the VA 371 at 11.1, the VA 401 at 12 and the VA 411 at 12.5 metres. The two Vivas are the 14 metre 461 and the 16.5 metre 551. Seven lines run until 2005.
Every VA yacht is now at least twenty years old, and most are used the way they were meant to be: long passages and summer cruises. Before setting off, have the standing rigging checked, since wire and terminals age even when they look fine, and look over the chainplates and the rudder bearings. Larger models such as the Viva 551 need a berth with enough depth and a crane that can handle their weight.
