Van Dam Nordia Yachten B.V.; cover, cost and conditions

Van Dam Nordia is a Dutch yard at Aalsmeer, south west of Amsterdam. Its roots reach back to 1881, when Arie van Dam took over the works there. What it built were one off yachts to the owner's brief, mostly sailing yachts with hull and deck in aluminium, alongside steel builds. You recognise them by the smooth unriveted aluminium skin, the low deckhouse and the long narrow deck; many carry a cutter or ketch rig and a lifting keel for shallow water.

Our model records list 79 Van Dam Nordia models, 68 of them sailing yachts and eleven motor yachts. Recorded build years run from 1964 to 2013. Sixty series are recorded: the Cruiser line from the Nordia 50 to the Nordia 95, the Traditional models 70, 75 and 80, and special rigs such as the Nordia 80 Ketch and the Nordia 85 Staysail Schooner. The motor yachts run as Nordia LX and GT in 22, 26 and 30. From the early years come the Carena 35, 37 and 40. Lengths run from 9.7 to 31.2 metres, half the models between 15.5 and 22.5 metres.

These are one off boats, which is the thing worth knowing about the brand. There is no series against which a value could be read off, because two Nordias of the same length can be fitted out very differently. The material matters too: an aluminium hull dents where a plastic one cracks, and it needs clean isolation wherever stainless fittings bear on it, since the two metals do not sit happily together in salt water.
