Van der Vlis Scheepbouw; cover, cost and conditions
Van der Vlis Scheepsbouw was a yard in Harlingen in the Dutch province of Friesland, known for sturdy steel cruising yachts. Harlingen produced the Cumulant yachts, designed by Cumulant Jachtbouw and built by Van der Vlis with steel hull, deck and superstructure. Under the name MC van der Vlis the yard also drew its own boats, such as the Skua 42, valued for its quiet, easy motion under sail. Three family names identify the yachts: Cumulant with Roman numerals or numbers, Skagerrak and Skua, plus single designs such as the Giles 38 and DEB 33.
Our model records list 29 Van der Vlis models: 28 sailing yachts and the Cumulant 1530 MY, the only motor yacht, at 15.3 metres. Recorded build years run from 1965 to 2006, and none continues into current production. Lengths range from 9.3 to 24 metres, half of them between 10.2 and 12.8 metres. The Cumulant family starts with the original Cumulant of 1965 at 9.5 metres and runs through the Cumulant I to IV and 36 to 45 up to the Cumulant 65 at 19.9 and the Cumulant 80 at 24 metres. The Skagerrak models measure 12 to 17 metres and the Skua 34 to 42 run from 10.4 to 12.8 metres.
These steel yachts were built as cruising boats, and many are still sailed that way today. Their value depends above all on the state of the steel under the paint, the age of the engine and rigging, and how well the interior joinery has been kept.

For the Skagerrak II, Cumulant 45,
Cumulant I by Van der Vlis Scheepbouw and 4 more series the market value and the replacement cost
often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Cumulant 42, Cumulant 1530 MY,
Cumulant 80 by Van der Vlis Scheepbouw and 19 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Skagerrak II, Cumulant 45, Cumulant I by Van der Vlis Scheepbouw and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Cumulant 1530 MY by Van der Vlis Scheepbouw series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
