Vennekens; cover, cost and conditions
Vennekens is a Belgian yard from Boom on the river Rupel, south of Antwerp; broker listings also spell the name Vennekels. Its name is tied above all to the Koral series, seagoing sailing yachts built in small numbers. One Koral 40 Oceangoing from the yard has a welded Corten steel hull, a ketch rig, a fin keel and three watertight bulkheads, with the interior fitted out in house and the exterior lines drawn by E. Vennekels. The Koral 46 is likewise listed as an in-house design. The boats read as long-distance cruisers: solid, with separate cabins and plenty of room for stores.
Our model records hold five sailing yachts, all named Koral. The Koral 46 at 14.1 metres starts in 1985, the Koral 40 and Koral 44 follow in 1986, the Koral 42 and Koral 54 in 1987. The Koral 40 and Koral 42 both measure 12.1 metres, the Koral 44 12.8 metres, and the Koral 54 is the largest at 16.4 metres. Production ends between 1993 and 1998, with the Koral 42 running longest. None of the lines reaches the latest build years, so every Koral today is a used yacht with at least a quarter of a century behind it.
A steel yacht of this age stands or falls with its plating and paint. On a used Koral, ask for an ultrasonic thickness survey, look at the bilges under the engine and tanks, and inspect every place where deck fittings, chainplates and windows pass through the steel. Corten weathers well in air, but it still needs a sound coating below the waterline. The ketch rig spreads the sail area over two masts, which keeps each sail manageable for a short-handed crew, though it doubles the standing rigging to check. Watertight bulkheads and generous stowage are part of what makes these boats attractive for long passages.
