Vermeulen's Jachtwerf was based in Terneuzen on the Westerschelde, in the Dutch province of Zeeland, and L.A. Vermeulen designed its signature boats. The name Scheldeschouw joins the river Schelde with the schouw, a traditional flat-bottomed Dutch boat. A 1970 Super Scheldeschouw shows how the yard built: steel hull with a pronounced chine, plywood deck laid with teak, a mahogany coachroof sheathed in glassfibre, a long box keel, shallow draught and a mast lowering system for bridges. Stainless framed windows set into the steel complete a look that is easy to recognise.

Age alone says little about a steel hull; only a survey shows how it has fared. Ask for ultrasonic thickness readings, especially along the chine, in the bilge and under the box keel, where water and dirt collect. Where wood meets steel, as on the plywood and teak deck and the mahogany coachroof, look for rot and for rust creeping under the joints. The lowering mast is a joy on inland waterways; check its tabernacle, pivot and the gear that raises it. With shallow draught these boats take to the Zeeland and Wadden shallows, where drying out can be part of the plan.
