Worth knowing

Via Marine; cover, cost and conditions

The Via name stands for aluminium cruising yachts built in France by the Chantiers Maritimes de Paimpol et Fécamp, known as CMPF, to drawings by the naval architect Jean-Louis Noir. Besides the Via 42, sale listings also show a Via 38 and a Via 52, all in aluminium and all from Noir's board. The Via 42 has a hull of 5 mm marine aluminium with the lead ballast carried inside, and instead of a fixed keel she relies on twin hydraulically operated swing centreboards. That lets her reach shallow anchorages a fin keeler cannot use and take the ground safely for routine work. The metal hull and the shallow draught with the boards up are what set her apart.

Our model records list one line for the Via Marine brand: the Via 42, a sailing yacht of 12.7 metres with build years from 1978 to 1992. That makes fifteen model years, and no line runs into the most recent build years. The Via 38 and Via 52 do not appear as separate lines in our records. Anyone looking for a Via 42 today is looking at second-hand boats only, the oldest from 1978 and the youngest from 1992. The defining feature is the variable draught: the listing quotes about one metre with the boards raised and just under 2.2 metres with them down, so the boat suits both open water and estuaries.

Aluminium is forgiving in many ways but has one strict rule: keep dissimilar metals apart. Check the anodes every season, use an antifouling without copper and look closely wherever stainless fittings sit on the hull, because galvanic corrosion starts there. The hydraulic centreboards need their rams, hoses and pivots inspected, and the boards themselves should be dropped and checked when the boat is ashore. On a used Via 42, an ultrasonic thickness survey of the plating is worth more than any photo. Boats like this are often bought for long passages and high latitudes, so ask about the wiring, the tankage and how the boat was laid up between voyages.

Questions and answers

Frequent questions

Who designed and built the Via 42?

For Via Marine: Jean-Louis Noir drew her,

and the Chantiers Maritimes de Paimpol et Fécamp (CMPF) built her in aluminium.

Our model records list her at 12.7 metres with build years from 1978 to 1992.

Why does the Via 42 have two centreboards instead of a keel?

For Via Marine: The twin hydraulic swing boards give a draught of about one metre when raised,

so the boat can reach shallow anchorages and dry out.

With the boards down she sails at just under 2.2 metres.

Via 42

Via 42 is a sailing yacht from Via Marine, built from 1978 to 1992.

What this means for the cover

For the Via 42 by Via Marine series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Via 42 by Via Marine series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
