VMG Yachtbuilders B.V.; cover, cost and conditions

VMG Yachtbuilders works in Enkhuizen on the IJsselmeer, right next door to the design office of Olivier van Meer, and that is where his Puffin yachts are built. The hulls are seawater resistant aluminium, welded in round bilge form over a load bearing frame of ribs and stringers, with a choice of centreboard or fixed keel. Owners shape layout, materials and rig to their own taste, so no two boats are quite alike. Beyond the Puffins the yard built the Agile 42, a cruising yacht made entirely of carbon fibre, and from 2020 a Wadden Sea boat called Ijver, which grew into the Ijver Class: the look of a fishing trawler with the comfort of a motor yacht.

The Puffin family accounts for seven entries from 2017: the Puffin 37 at 11.15 metres, the Puffin 41, 42, 50, 58 and 58 Explorer, and the Puffin 65, which at 23 metres is the largest design listed. Aluminium hulls ask for attention to galvanic corrosion: anodes, through hulls and any stainless fittings bedded on the metal deserve a close look at every haul out, and a buyer should ask for a survey with thickness readings. A centreboard version needs its board, pivot and lifting gear checked. Because each Puffin was fitted out to its first owner's wishes, the equipment list matters as much as the hull number. Many of these yachts are planned for long passages, so the state of the rig, the tankage and the steering gear tells a good deal about how a boat has been used.
