W. D. Schock Corp is a Californian sailboat builder, today based in Santa Ana. William D. Schock, known to everyone as Bill, founded it in 1958. He had built his first boat at thirteen in the garage of the family home in Hollywood, and after the Second World War he set up a workshop in Newport Beach, where he started out repairing rental boats. The firm made its name with the Lido 14, a dinghy drawn by Barney Lehman and Bill Schock together and first built in 1958. The boats are moulded in glassfibre. The Harbor 20 was designed by Bill's son Steven Schock. After 53 years the family sold the business in 2011, and since 2014 it has belonged to John O'Donnell, previously the yard's general manager.
Our model records hold four designs from the yard: three open sailing boats and one sailing yacht. All four are listed from build year 2018 onwards and run into the most recent build years; earlier Lido vintages are not filed under this name. The smallest is the Lido 14 at 4.27 metres. The two Harbor models measure 6.09 and 7.85 metres and are classed as open boats. At the top sits the Schock 40 at 12.19 metres, the only yacht in the set. Three of the four stay under eight metres.
These are fibreglass boats meant to be sailed often, and they reward simple routines. A dinghy like the Lido 14 lives on a trailer, so wheel bearings, lights and the winch strap deserve a look before every trip, and the hull should be rinsed after salt water. On a Harbor 20 or 25 the standing rigging and the keel bolts are worth checking each season. When buying a used Schock 40, ask for the rig history and inspect the keel area and the steering. Many owners race at club level, so sails can show real wear even on a young boat.
