WeCo b.v. Motorsloepen, now trading as WeCo Sloepen BV in Warmond near Leiden, is a Dutch yard for sloepen, the open launches familiar on Dutch lakes and canals. WeCo builds classic spitsgat sloops with a pointed stern; the WeCo 635, for instance, is known for its lines and the stainless end fittings on its rubbing strake. The model number gives roughly the length in centimetres, from the 4.7 metre WeCo 470 to the 8.25 metre WeCo 825.
Our records list ten WeCo models, seven motorboats and three motor yachts. The earliest build year is 1991, for the WeCo 470 and 625, both recorded until 2003. The 685 followed in 1994, the 471 and 635 in 1996, the 825 in 1998 and the 570 in 2003. A sloep is made for inland water: lakes, rivers and canals, usually with family or friends aboard and a picnic on the bench. The smaller WeCo models travel on a trailer, while the 825 versions are more at home on a berth. Any wooden trim wants oil each spring, a canvas over the open cockpit keeps the rain out, and a winter in a dry shed protects both hull and engine.
