Wester-Engh builds its boats in Alphen aan den Rijn, in the green heart of Holland between Leiden and Gouda. The yard traces its history to the early 1980s and concentrates on sloepen and tenders, the broad open launches the Dutch use on canals, rivers and lakes. Each boat is built by hand. A Dutch broker describes the Classic line as retro styling with modern performance; alongside it stand the Cabin models and the Beaver range. The type itself is easy to read from the quay: low sides, generous beam and a cockpit made for a group of friends on a summer evening.
Our model records hold eight designs, all motorboats and all listed into the most recent build years. The Classic line opens with the 700 Classic at 7 metres, followed by the 750 Classic at 7.42 metres, the earliest entry from 2004, and the 800 Classic. The 800 also exists as a plain 800 and as the 800 Cabin, all three at 8.18 metres. The largest is the 1000 Cabin at 9.8 metres. The Beaver range arrived in 2013 with the Beaver 23 at 7.5 metres and the Beaver 29 at 9 metres. Six designs sit between 7 and 8.18 metres, two measure 9 metres or more.
A sloep spends its life on inland water, often moored right outside the house. Seating, upholstery and the canvas hood take the most wear and want cleaning and airing through the season. On a used Wester-Engh, check the cushions for damp, the hood for torn seams and the engine compartment for oil traces, and look at the rubbing strake, which meets plenty of lock walls in a Dutch summer. Many of these boats are used for a few hours at a time, so engine hours alone say little; a record of regular servicing says far more. Winter storage indoors keeps the varnish and the canvas in good shape.
