Wrighton; cover, cost and conditions

Wrighton was a French yard, and its boats sail under the Bi-Loup name. Richard Wrighton created the brand in 1978 and built the boats in Béthune, beside the Aire canal and a fair way from the sea. A good share left the shed as kits for owners to finish themselves. What sets a Bi-Loup apart is the twin keel: two fins let the hull sit upright when the tide goes out, a layout common in northern Europe yet rare in France. The boats were conceived as sturdy family cruisers. In 2013 the Béthune yard entered court-supervised reorganisation, a new team in Caen with naval architect François Lebailly carried on building, and the company was wound up in 2018.

Our model records hold five designs: four sailing yachts and one open sailing boat. The Bi-Loup 102 is the oldest entry, from 1984, and at 10.22 metres also the largest. The Bi-Loup 77 at 7.53 metres follows from 1988, then the Bi-Loup 88 at 8.8 metres and the Bi-Loup 66 at 6.6 metres, both from 1990. The 66 is listed as an open boat and ends in 2003, while the 77, 88 and 102 run to 2005. The Biloup 89, at 8.98 metres, came last and is recorded from 1998 to 2008. None of the lines reaches the most recent build years, so every Bi-Loup on the market today is second-hand.

Twin keels shape both how these boats are used and how they age. Drying out on sand or mud loads the keel roots and the surrounding hull on every tide, so on a used Bi-Loup it pays to look for cracks or weeping at the keel joints and to have the keel bolts checked. Kit-built boats deserve an even closer look, because the finish below decks depends on whoever completed it: wiring, deck fittings and the bonding of bulkheads can differ from one boat to the next. The rig is simple and easy to handle for a small family crew in shallow coastal waters and estuaries. With the yard closed, parts specific to the hull have to be sourced or made elsewhere.
