Worth knowing
Xiamen Hansheng Yacht Building; cover, cost and conditions
Hansheng Yachtbuilding is based in Xiamen on the south-east coast of China. Western sailors know the yard above all for the Flying Tiger 10, a raceboat drawn by the American designer Robert Perry and built by Hansheng from 2005 according to its encyclopaedia entry. It was conceived as a one-design from the start, every boat the same so that the crew makes the difference on the course. The boat is trailerable, with a lifting keel and a carbon fibre mast, boom and bowsprit. Shipping was part of the brief as well: the yacht fits inside a 40 foot container, which made it possible to send boats from Xiamen to fleets abroad. A long bowsprit for the gennaker and a wide, open cockpit give it away.
Our model records hold a single Hansheng design, the Flying Tiger 10 sailing yacht, listed for the build years 2002 to 2012 at 9.95 metres; the encyclopaedia entry gives 2005 as the start of series production. No line of the brand reaches into recent build years, so every Flying Tiger 10 today is a used boat. The source puts displacement at 1985 kilograms, with 870 kilograms in the keel. That is light for a boat of nearly ten metres, and it shapes the character: planing downwind, a big gennaker and a crew sitting out on the rail.
A lifting keel needs regular attention. When looking at a used Flying Tiger 10, check the keel box and the lifting mechanism for wear, look at the bulb for signs of a hard grounding and ask how often the boat has been trailed. Carbon spars do not corrode like aluminium, but impact damage can hide under the paint, so a careful look at the mast step, the gooseneck and the bowsprit fitting is worthwhile. Racing boats often have tired sails and well used deck gear, while boats sailed mainly for fun may be in better shape. A complete set of class sails and a good road trailer add real value.
