Worth knowing
Yellowfin Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Yellowfin Yachts builds center console boats in Sarasota on Florida's Gulf coast, made for serious offshore fishing. Founder Wylie Nagler came from offshore powerboat racing and tournament fishing, and in 1998 set out to build a fast, wave-piercing center console that would also be a fully equipped fishing boat. The first Yellowfin, a 31-footer, was introduced in 2000. The model names are straightforward: the number is the length in feet, and the suffix hints at the water a boat is meant for, from Skiff and Bay for shallow inshore water to Offshore for open sea.
Our records hold 13 Yellowfin models, all listed as motorboats. Seven are Offshore boats, the 29, 32, 34, 36, 39, 42 and 54. Then come the 21 and 26 Hybrid, the 24 Bay with its Carbon Elite variant, the 17 Skiff and the Yellowfin 23 without suffix. Nine models start in 2007 in our data, the 39 Offshore follows in 2011, the 26 Hybrid and 24 Bay Carbon Elite in 2012 and the 54 Offshore in 2017. Twelve lines run into the most recent build years; only the 23 stops in 2016. Lengths range from 5.3 metres for the 17 Skiff to 16.46 metres for the 54 Offshore.
Owners of the smaller boats, from the 17 Skiff to the 26 Hybrid, usually tow them to the ramp and keep them at home or in dry stack storage. The Offshore models tend to live on a lift or in a rack and often run several outboards, which calls for a strict fresh water flush after every trip. Rod holders, electronics and fishing gear add up quickly, so a written list of everything aboard is worth keeping.
