Young Sun was a Taiwanese yard that built glassfibre cruising yachts through the 1970s and 1980s, part of the wave of Taiwan builders whose boats were largely aimed at buyers in the United States at the time. The Young Sun 43 was drawn by the designer Ron Amy. Both models in the range share a clear family look: a cutter rig with two headsails, a full-length long keel, a heavy hull with generous displacement and, below decks, a joinery fit-out with plenty of teak. These were boats conceived for passages and liveaboard life rather than for round-the-cans racing.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts. The Young Sun 35 measures 10.54 metres and appears with build years from 1978 to 1987. The Young Sun 43 comes in at 13.51 metres and runs from 1979 to 1989, so the number in each name is roughly the length in feet. Almost three metres separate the two sisters, and for about a decade they were offered side by side. Neither line reaches the most recent build years; the last boat in our records dates from 1989, which means every Young Sun on the market today is a used yacht with several decades behind it.
A heavy long-keeler of this age rewards careful inspection before purchase. Chainplates and their deck penetrations deserve a close look, as do the standing rigging, which may be far older than the seller remembers, and any fuel or water tanks set deep in the hull. Teak trim and interior joinery tell a lot about how the boat has been kept: dry, well-oiled wood usually points to a dry boat. A long keel tracks steadily on passage but needs planning when manoeuvring astern in a crowded marina. Many owners use these yachts for long-distance cruising, so a survey of the rudder bearings and the engine installation is time well spent.
