Aristo Craft; cover, cost and conditions
Aristo Craft, formally The Atlanta Boat Company, comes from Atlanta, Georgia. Its founder Claude Turner began building small wooden boats after the Second World War and developed his own planing hull in 1947. Racing hydros of twelve to 14 feet followed, then the Typhoon and the Torpedo, and in the late fifties the Avalon and the Matador, larger boats built for ever more powerful outboards. The early hulls were plywood shells without frames, held together by stringers and skin alone. In 1959 the company switched its whole production to glassfibre and from then on turned out affordable family boats on an assembly line. When Turner retired in 1980 the brand seemed finished, until his son Bill bought the rights in 1987 and began building historically correct wooden models again.
Our model records list one Aristo Craft design: the Aristo Craft 19, a motorboat of 6.2 metres with the build years 1976 to 1983. It belongs to the glassfibre era of the yard, some fifteen years after the move away from plywood, and its production ran on past Turner's retirement. No line reaches into recent years. The better known names of the brand, such as the Torpedo, Typhoon or Matador, are not part of our records, nor are the wooden boats built after 1987. At just over six metres the 19 is a classic family and day boat, roomy enough for a small group and still easy to trailer. Today it is mostly found in the hands of enthusiasts for American classics.
A boat built between 1976 and 1983 has seen four decades or more, and the first thing to check is what lies under the gelcoat. Stringers and transom in boats of this era were often cored with wood, so soft spots in the floor, flexing around the transom and moisture readings tell more than a fresh coat of paint. Wiring, fuel tank and hoses are usually due for renewal if they are still original. Upholstery and chrome are easy to judge by eye, structural rot is not, so a survey before purchase is money well spent. Many of these boats spend their lives on a trailer, which makes the trailer's brakes, bearings and rollers part of the inspection too.
