DK Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
DK Yachts is a composite boatbuilder in Melaka on the west coast of Malaysia and has been in business since 1997. It is one of three yards licensed by Farr International to build its one-design classes: the Mumm 30, Farr 36 One Design, Farr 40 One Design and Farr 52 One Design. The Farr 40 was drawn in 1996 as a one-design and built mainly by Carroll Marine in Rhode Island before DK Yachts also took up production. Strict class rules keep the boats as close to identical as possible. In 2002 the yard teamed up with Mills Design for a boat of its own, the Mark Mills DK 46, meant for IRC racing as well as comfortable offshore passages.
Our model records list five designs, all sailing yachts. Four carry the Farr name: the Farr 36 at 11 metres, the Farr F40 at 12.41 metres and the Farr F52 and Farr 520, each at 15.85 metres. Then there is the DK 46 at 14.1 metres, listed from 2001 to 2012. The Farr F40 starts in 1996, the Farr 520 in 2001 and the Farr F52 in 2002. The Farr 36 entry goes back to 1973, further than the yard itself, so the builder's plate on each boat is what counts. The latest build year is 2016 for the Farr 520, the others end in 2012, and no line reaches the recent build years.
Grand prix one-designs live hard lives. Hulls are light and stiff, and years of hard racing can leave hidden damage around the keel floor, the mast step and the chainplates, so an ultrasound or tap test of the laminate is worth the money on any used boat. Check the keel bolts and look for cracking where the keel meets the hull. Carbon spars, running rigging and deck hardware are expensive to replace and wear out on a racing schedule. Ask about the boat's racing history and any groundings. A former racer converted for cruising may have lost weight and rating optimisation, but it often gains a simpler deck layout and more comfort below.
