Worth knowing
Dockrell Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Dockrell Yachts Ltd. was based in Tavistock, Devon, and was started by the American John Dockrell. Through the seventies and eighties it built cruising boats from 22 to 37 feet. The story begins with an inherited design: what became the Dockrell 27 started life as the Bowman 26, turned into the Hurley 27 at Hurley Marine, and in 1974 those moulds passed to Dockrell. John Dockrell reworked the boat himself, changing the coachroof, opening up the interior and giving her a cutter rig with a self-tacking staysail. The largest design, the Dockrell 37, is a cutter as well, with a boomed staysail. She has a stub keel with a retractable centreboard for shallow water, was built to Lloyd's rules, and her beam was held to about ten feet so she could use European canals and travel by road. A glassfibre hull, wooden trim and aluminium spars complete the picture.
Our model records list four designs from the build years 1978 to 1994, two sailing boats and two sailing yachts. The smallest is the Dockrell 17 at 4.88 metres, recorded from 1988 to 1994. The Dockrell 22 measures 6.63 metres and runs from 1985 to 1991. Among the yachts, the Dockrell 27 at 8.23 metres stands for 1985 to 1992, and the Dockrell 37 at 11.2 metres is listed from 1978 to 1991. The number in each name follows the length in feet. None of the lines reaches into recent build years. Just over six metres separate the smallest from the largest boat, so the range runs from a small trailer boat to a yacht for long passages through canals and across open water.
A cutter rig means two headsails, a staysail boom, furlers and a good deal of hardware, so check every fitting, the furling gear and the chainplates before the first season. On the Dockrell 37 the centreboard deserves special attention: look at the pivot, the lifting tackle and the case for leaks or cracks, and make sure the board drops and lifts freely. A boat that has spent years in canals may show scrapes along the topsides from lock walls. Glassfibre hulls from the eighties can suffer from osmosis, so a moisture reading is worth having. The smaller 17 and 22 often come with a road trailer, whose bearings and lights need checking too.
