Worth knowing
Drascombe CBL Ltd; cover, cost and conditions
Drascombe CBL Ltd stands for Churchouse Boats, the British yard that has built Drascombe boats under licence since 2002. The family itself goes back further: John Watkinson drew the first Drascombe Lugger in 1965, and Honnor Marine produced the boats in glass fibre for many years afterwards. Churchouse Boats is a separate business that took over the licence later and passed to Sharon Geary-Harwood and Simon Harwood in 2013. A Drascombe is easy to recognise by its wide, deep cockpit, its high topsides and the boomless yawl rig with a small mizzen at the stern, a combination that makes the boats forgiving, simple to sail and pleasant to row.
Our model records hold a single design for this brand, the Drascombe Coaster, a sailing boat 6.63 metres long, listed with build years from 1999 to 2005. The Coaster appeared in 1979, when a small cabin was added to the open Longboat. That turned a day boat into a trailer sailer for weekends, with two berths under the cuddy. According to Yachting Monthly around 270 Coasters have been built by several yards, and our records show the part of the run made around the turn of the millennium. Older Coasters from the Honnor Marine era have their own brand page.
A Coaster is a glass fibre boat with simple systems, so the checks before buying are mostly structural. Look at the hull and keel band for wear from beaching, at the centreplate and its pivot, and at the rudder fittings. The masts are short and the rig has few parts, but the halyards, the tabernacle and the mizzen step still deserve a look, as does the outboard well. These boats are at home on estuaries, lakes and sheltered coasts, and many owners trail them to new cruising grounds or take them on longer coastal passages in settled weather.
